Mine excursion and tours

Prior to the official opening of the conference delegates will have an opportunity to participate in one of the following, both of which will include lunch:

  • Mine excursion. This will include a visit to underground workings. Numbers will be strictly limited.
  • General interest tour.

After lunch on the final day there will be a second general interest tour. There will be a small additional fee to cover the costs of this event.

Prof. Stefan Berger (Ruhr University, Germany) on The Ten Most Important Dates in International Mining History.

Prof. Dunbar Moodie (Hobart and William Smith Colleges, United States) on The History of Mining on the Witwatersrand.

Plenary sessions

Nationalisation and Control of Mining: Lessons from the Past. Speakers include: Prof. Chris Wrigley (University of Nottingham, United Kingdom), Prof. Bill Freund (University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa).

Mining, the Environment and the Future of Humanity. Speakers include: Prof. Terence McArthy (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa).
